**2012 Student HPC Competition Winner Announced**
Colby Stanley, a freshman at WV Wesleyan College, was named the winner of the WV HPCR Student HPC Competition during the the 4th biennial STaR Symposium.
Colby’s project, “Pulsar Timing Data Analysis”, was completed using resources at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
With guidance from Dr. Trevor Stevens, Assistant Professor of Physical Science, Colby applied for and received a start-up allocation through XSEDE in order to study “whether there is a planet whose gravity is affecting the frequency of the emitted electromagnetic waves orbiting the pulsar in question.” The use of a supercomputer cluster allowed him to “focus on a smaller step size over a much larger range of frequencies which would not be feasible on a personal computer.”
